Generating Electricity for You
Minnesota uses a diverse mix of energy sources to generate the electricity you use daily in your homes, businesses and lives. When you power your lights, start the washing machine, or run the copier the electricity used may come from a variety of sources to ensure the availability of electricity. Coal and nuclear power plants provide Minnesota's baseload power and we are a national leader in wind and biomass development.

What is Baseload Power?

- Baseload power is available for 24-7 demand and the energy comes from high-capacity generating plants. These plans cost less to operate when running at full efficiency.
- Peaking power is available when demand is the highest. Plant operation costs are higher since they allow for a quick start-up when energy demands change.
- Intermittent power is available only when supply allows, so it cannot be relied upon to react to a level of demand.
